Watu Maladong The Exotic Sumba Beach

Watu Malandong is probably one of the best-kept secrets of Sumba. Not too many Sumbanese themselves are in the know about this extraordinary beach.

We accidentally found out about Watu Malandong when we saw a picture of it made by a Catholic priest, in a postcard sold at a local store. And then we decided to look for it ourselves. We went to Kodi and started asking around. After some trials and errors, we finally found Watu Malandong.

We had to leave our car at the end of a dirt road and climbed down by foot (about 1 km) through some bushes. And then suddenly the vista opened to a vast beach bordered by a stream. But it was the sight of the boulders that had taken our breaths away. Describing the vista as "dream-like" may sound cheesy, but at that point we couldn't find any other word to describe Watu Malandong.

And apparently, the local Kodinese people believe that this beach is a sacred ground. When we arrived there, we understood why.

----------

- Distance from Tambolaka Airport: about 1,5 - 2 hours by car, southwest-bound to Kodi.

- Why we like it:
* The amazing view of the stream, and the giant boulders.
* A vast and thick stretch of sand that goes on and on.
* Strong waves that makes you want to be alert at all times
* Very few people know about it, to date.
* Please add you own points after you've been there :-)
