A WELL KEPT SECRET
Three decades ago Bali was thrust onto the main stage of
tropical island destination travel by surfers seeking the year round
“perfect wave”.
Sumba, with its south coast exposure to Indian Ocean swells
from the bottom of the world, is emerging as a more affordable and more
private alternative.
Like Bali in the seventies, Sumba is for the person with a pioneer spirit, not the faint of heart. Sumba Island is a diamond but she is still in the rough. She needs travelers with savvy and resourcefulness, not ones who expect first world services.

The next generation of Sumba travelers is becoming aware of
the magnificent south coast on the Indian Ocean, the surf and the
private beaches. The waves rival anything Bali has to offer; the
beaches offer pristine white sand, and the people are unspoiled and
friendly.
Did we mention waves?? Some water sports enthusiasts have
already discovered the “perfect wave” for themselves. Surf boards,
kites and other exotic sports equipment are regularly appearing on the
south coast. What happens next on the coast is up to us and our good
will. With a modicum of communication and cooperation, Sumba could
easily become the envy of the water sports world.
